What You Can Do to Stop Hair Loss

Some hair loss is normal; we all naturally shed 50 to100 hairs a day. If you seem to be losing too much hair, or you notice thinning or bald spots, there are some things you can do to stop hair loss.

Healthy Diet

Hair is sensitive to your diet. Very low calorie diets and eating disorders can cause hair loss.

Hair is made from protein, so it makes sense that you may experience hair loss if you don’t have enough protein in your diet. Not getting enough protein isn’t a problem in developed countries, but increasing your protein intake can still help stop hair loss. Eating fish is especially beneficial because of the oils in fish.

Make sure you are getting enough B vitamins, vitamin C, folic acid and biotin, too. Usually you will get these nutrients if you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Shampooing

Keeping your hair and scalp clean helps stop hair loss. It’s recommended that you wash your hair at least every other day. While you’re shampooing, be sure to massage the scalp and hairline. This increases circulation to your hair follicles. Using nizoral shampoo may also help stop hair loss.

Conditioners

Conditioning and moisturizing your hair is important, too. Dry brittle hair not only falls out, it also breaks off. Protein conditioners—especially those with hydrolyzed human hair keratin proteins—work best. Leave the conditioner in for three to five minutes before rinsing it out.

Protect From UV Radiation

Your hair can get sunburned just like your skin. If your hair is really thin, your scalp can get sunburned, too. Protect exposed scalp from UV radiation with a good sunscreen. Protect your hair by covering it or by using a leave-in conditioner with sun block.

Natural Remedies

Some people find taking silica capsules helps stop hair loss. Ginko biloba may help because it improves circulation to the scalp. Another common natural remedy is to rinse your hair with a mixture of cider vinegar and sage tea once or twice a week.

Minoxidil (Rogaine®)

Minoxidil is an over-the-counter medication that stops hair loss. It is FDA approved for use by both men and women. You apply minoxidil to your scalp, and it does take a few weeks before you will see any improvement. Minoxidil helps a lot of people, but you have to keep on using it or you will start losing your hair again.

Prescriptions

There are prescription medications available specifically to stop hair loss. Propecia is the main one. Avodart is used, too, but it is not FDA approved to treat hair loss.

Hair loss may be caused by hormonal disturbances and other causes, and taking medications to treat those problems should help stop hair loss.

There are quite a few things you can do on your own to stop hair loss. If these don’t work, you should check with a doctor to see if there is an underlying cause for the hair loss, and discuss further treatment options with her.
