Is There a Reason for Hair Loss in Women?

Women consider their hair as part of their esteem, image and personality. Any hair loss can create high stress to women because without hair, many women would feel incomplete and unattractive.

Sometimes the reason for hair loss in women is hereditary issue, it can be the result of an infection, the result of an overdose of a drug or perhaps a side effect from a drug. In this case, the treatment of the infection or the stopping of the drug will stop the hair loss. But what if this is not the case?

Finding the Reason for Hair Loss

Women are continuously evolving biologically. They attain puberty at about 11 to 12 years of age, with maturity and reproductive stage starting at about 16 to 35 years and go through a pre-menopausal stage starting from 35 years onwards.

The post-menopausal stage too can cause havoc on the hair, and often begins when the woman is about 45-47 years old. Now, all these stages involve hormonal changes and this can be the leading reason for hair loss in women.

There are other reasons, too. A woman can inherit a gene that will cause hair loss at a certain time in life, be it pre- or post- menopause. Also, when a woman becomes pregnant there is a great surge of estrogen in her blood that promotes hair growth. However, immediately after birth, the estrogen level fall drastically, and with it the hair will fall too.

It is common knowledge that stress causes heavy hair loss. It so happens that when there is stress, the hair enters its resting phase, otherwise known as the “telogen effluvium” phase. This causes heavy hair loss.

Chemotherapy and radiotherapy can also be major causes of hair loss in women. This is because this type of treatment attacks the matrix of the hair and destroys it, causing massive loss of hair.

An autoimmune disorder called alopecia areata is another reason for hair loss. This is still a medical mystery. The hair follicles are deprived from receiving the required nutrients due to a sudden inflammation of the surrounding tissues, causing sudden and profuse hair loss.

The identification of the reason for hair loss will help you to treat the problem with optimal results. Hence, your efforts should be concentrated on finding out the root cause of this problem via professional medical diagnosis before proceeding with any treatment.
