Hair Loss: Why and How It Happens

The only people who tend to worry about hair loss are men who are reaching their late 40s or early 50s, when they realize that that full head of hair they once had as a young man will soon end up on their pillow. But hair loss is not restricted to just older men — anyone can experience this problem. Here are some facts behind hair loss and how it may or may not affect you:

Why It Happens

Just like your skin sheds to make room for a new stratum, your hair also leaves the scalp . This occurs in a cycle, in which the dormant hair will fall out and be replaced with new hair. This can last for two to six years. This is the normal cycle of hair loss that you shouldn’t be concerned about. But if you are experiencing rapid hair loss, there may be external factors creating this problem.

Other Reasons

The stress induced by an illness can cause a large amount of hair loss, but it is temporary and your hair will grow back. Medicines you take for an illness can also affect your hair’s normal cycle. Hormonal changes are a big factor inducing the loss of hair. If your thyroid gland is either hyper- or hypo- active, it can cause hair loss. Also, pregnant women go through hair loss when specific hormones that retain the hair that would normally fall out increase, and after the pregnancy is over, the hormones return to normal and the hair falls out in masses and the hair returns to the normal cycle.

Treatment Options

The treatment for hair loss depends upon what is causing the hair loss in the first place. If you are experiencing this because of medicine, illness or hormonal changes, then your doctor will most likely have you take a different medication, or just assure you that the loss is temporary and that your hair will grow back. If you are an older man or woman and are experiencing “common baldness”, then there are medication options such as Rogaine, and Propecia to aid with your problem.

If you are experiencing thinning hair, no need to be too concerned about it. Usually it is a sign your body is experiencing an intermission of normalcy. You will eventually return to normal. If you are an older man or woman, there are different options to keep your hair as thick as possible.
