Causes of Hair Loss in a Woman

Many factors can cause hair loss in a women. Stress is very common. Several months after having surgery it is not uncommon for women to experience the loss of large amounts of hair. This hair loss is the result of stress over the illness. The hair loss with be temporary. Other causes of hair loss aren’t as easy to identify or to solve.

Hormones

Hormonal issues can cause women to lose their hair. Having a thyroid that is either over or under active call result in your hair falling out. Treatment for thyroid disease can remedy the issue. Sometimes the female and male hormones known as androgens and estrogens are not in balance. Correcting this will also stop hair loss.

Hair loss in a woman can take place up to three months after giving birth. This has to do with hormones as well. During pregnancy hormone levels are high so your hair grows thicker and fuller. As your hormones return to normal levels the excess hair will fall out.

Medications

There are many medications that can cause hair loss in a woman. This situation will improve once you stop taking the medication. The types of medications that can cause hair loss in a woman include blood thinners, gout medication, chemotherapy, excessive vitamin A, birth control, and anti depressants. Having an infection can also lead to hair loss in a woman. Sometimes children experience hair loss due to a fungal infection of the scalp. This can easily be treated with an anti fungal medication that will allow new hair to grow.

Diseases

Hair loss in a woman can be the result of a disease such as lupus or diabetes. Hair loss can be an early sign of such diseases, so it is important to consult your Doctor if you experience hair loss.

The issues regarding hair loss in a woman are mostly treatable or take care of themselves in time. If you have been pregnant, don’t worry. Your body is simply getting back to normal. However, if you don’t have a reason to be losing your hair, consult medical attention to rule out the possibility of a disease.
