Dealing with Hair Loss after Pregnancy

Women who suffer from hair loss after pregnancy is very common. No treatment is necessary; your hair is simply working to return to the pre-pregnancy state.

Normal Hair Growth

Hair goes through a cycle called anagen which is the growth phase and deluge which is a resting phase. Anagen lasts about four to seven years. During this phase, hair grows about 1/2 inch each month. When the hair goes into the deluge phase it lasts for about three months before returning to anagen. It is not uncommon for women to lose 50 to 100 hairs each day.

Hair Growth During Pregnancy

Pregnant women are known to have thick, beautiful hair. This is the result of pregnancy hormones keeping hair follicles in the anagen state. Consider that instead of losing 100 hairs each day, your hair continues to grow. Since a pregnancy lasts approximately 280 days, which is an amazing amount of growth.

What Happens After Pregnancy

After the baby is born your hormones will change quickly. The hair follicles go into a resting state. Since telogen lasts about three months, you can expect to shed up to 28,000 hairs! Losing all your hair during the same time you are adjusting to a new baby and losing sleep can be enough to drive you to the edge.

During the time when you experience hair loss after pregnancy, take time for yourself. Let someone else care for the baby and go get your hair done at a quality salon. Getting a new haircut will help you manage the hair loss after pregnancy. You may also be interested in getting highlights or a new color while you are there. Since you will be busy with your new baby, ask for a style that is easy to manage yet still makes you look fabulous.

Volatizing hair products can help minimize the effects of hair loss as well. Shampoo, conditioner, mousse and hair serum are all great products that can give you thicker and fuller hair. You can also add flare to your hairstyle by using pretty barrettes and hair clips.

It is important to remember hair loss after pregnancy is normal and natural. You won’t go bald and all your hair isn’t going to fall out. You are only losing the extra hair you accumulated while you were pregnant. Most new moms don’t realize they are just as pretty now as they were before they became pregnant. You are just as beautiful as a new mom as you were before you got pregnant, but you probably don’t have as much time to spend on your hair.
